Making the case for solar photovoltaic-thermal technology in residential buildings

ENDEF presented their latest paper in Eurosun 2024 in collaboration with MiniStor’s own CARTIF and CERTH

Among the fusion of technologies that make the MiniStor system a reality, the hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) collectors are sometimes overlooked. However, this renewable energy source is critical in three ways: making the unit work, and doing so efficiently to minimise the electrical consumption from the grid, and then selling back to it. As they did back in 2022, ENDEF made another presentation in this year’s edition of Eurosun, alongside a brand new peer-reviewed paper making the case for a PVT-driven energy system, such as MiniStor, for a residential application.

With this contribution, ENDEF, CERTH and CARTIF supply evidence on solar technology’s potential for application at the residential building level. Particularly, the use of solar PVT technology has been growing in recent years, as it produces thermal and photovoltaic energy in a single device, with better overall efficiency than individual photovoltaic technology, which is already well positioned due to the ease of installation and integration. In the publication, the MiniStor partners assess the integration of thermal storage in the building energy system design, in this case for the Santiago de Compostela (Spain) demonstrator, defining electrical storage sizes that minimise the electrical consumption from the grid.

EuroSun 2024, the ISES and IEA SHC International Conference on Sustainable and Solar Energy for Buildings and Industry, took place from 26 – 30 August 2024 in Limassol, Cyprus. EuroSun 2024 was jointly organized by the International Solar Energy Society and the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. Locally, the conference was hosted by the Cyprus University of Technology and co-organized by ISES Cyprus, the local ISES section. The conference programme included distinguished keynote speakers, technical oral and poster sessions, workshops, technical tours, dedicated events for young researchers as well as social events where participants had the opportunity to network.
